The Fixtures Most Facilities Are Still Running

A lot of industrial spaces are still lit by fluorescent tubes or HID (high-intensity discharge) fixtures, metal halide is common in older warehouses. Both technologies work, but they come with baked-in costs that LED doesn’t have: HID lamps take minutes to reach full brightness after a power interruption, fluorescent tubes degrade in output well before they actually fail, and both require more frequent lamp changes than most maintenance teams have time for. LED retrofits save money in two separate ways, and it’s worth knowing the difference.

Energy draw. A facility running lights 10-16 hours a day, which is typical for warehouses and production shifts, sees the efficiency gap between LED and older technology compound fast. In most cases, existing housings can be retrofitted with LED components, which keeps costs down and avoids the disruption of a full fixture swap. A site walk-through is really the only way to know which approach fits a given building, since it depends on the age and condition of what’s already installed.

Getting the Layout Right

Swapping bulb-for-bulb isn’t the same as designing an industrial LED lighting plan. Ceiling height changes how light spreads, task areas (assembly lines, loading docks, inspection stations) need different brightness than open aisles, and color temperature affects how easy it is to spot defects or hazards.
